Challenge

The eighth edition of Caderno Sesc_Videobrasil gathers essays and artistic projects by contributors writing in Portuguese, English, French and other languages around a single curatorial theme, "Pertença" (Belonging). The book needed to hold that many voices, translations and visual registers together as one coherent object without flattening any of them.

Solution

A kraft-brown cover printed in yellow sets the tone for the whole edition, with the title kept plainly as "caderno" rather than book or magazine. Inside, a warm yellow runs through as the identity thread, appearing as a divider color, as underlines that carry translated text alongside the original, and as a full-bleed field on title spreads. Vellum overlays with hand-traced route lines sit over photographic backgrounds, and full-color illustration is let to interrupt dense scholarly typesetting where a contribution calls for it.

Success

Now in its eighth edition, the Caderno remains an ongoing collaboration between Sesc São Paulo and Associação Cultural Videobrasil, this volume edited by critic and curator Moacir dos Anjos.
