Challenge

Girls meet the canon of art early, with names like Picasso, Miró, and Monet, but rarely see women artists, or an honest picture of what a woman's body, motherhood, or identity actually looks like. This design thesis for the Master's in Design at Universidad de los Andes set out to build an illustrated ebook for girls ages 3 to 5 that could offer that reference before school handed them the usual one.

Solution

The concept was grounded in research on five women artists, Louise Bourgeois, Rineke Dijkstra, Sophie Calle, Nan Goldin, and Adriana Tabalipa, whose work confronts motherhood, the body, and intimacy without polish. Their language shaped a book built through co-creation, where women of all ages answered three questions ("What is being a woman to you?", "What is your body to you?", "What is makeup to you?") through an online survey, and those fragments of text were then illustrated by girls ages 3 to 5 in workshops, remixed with the author's own illustrations. The book was designed as a concrete-poetry exercise in the tradition of Arnaldo Antunes, with hyperlinked animations planned to set the words in motion, 360° photography for augmented-reality pages, and an original score commissioned from a Bogotá free-jazz quartet. It was built as an epub, readable on iPad, iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone, distributed by download link and by QR codes posted at the school.

Success

50 women had already responded to the survey by the time of writing, with the questionnaire open to women of any age or country. Illustration workshops were piloted with girls ages 3 to 5 at the Universidad de los Andes's jardín, with the model designed to scale to additional schools. As a design-thesis proposal, the project's success is documented in this concept and production plan rather than in post-launch usage data.
