Challenge

Design students entering Universidad de los Andes need a foundation in concept creation before they can apply it to any specific medium. The course teaches "lenguajes" (languages) not as a technique but as a way of understanding how form communicates, across two and three dimensions alike.

Solution

Estudio Básico Uno: Lenguajes is a practice-based studio where students train in concept creation as an opportunity for creative experimentation across diverse media. Rather than lecture on theory, the course builds students' capacity to develop and express ideas by understanding the particular qualities of whichever medium they're working in, learning and internalizing tools that let them express, interpret, and imagine, so they can communicate sensitively and effectively. Within the design program, languages are framed as expressive channels that let people share their understanding through a creative process.

Success

The course runs as a core foundation studio in the design program at Universidad de los Andes, building the conceptual groundwork students carry into every medium-specific studio that follows.
